HoG Blog Continued: The Caribbean Voyage

To the followers of Heart of Gold:

Since our last blog post, our beloved vessel has made quite a journey. After our trek from England to the Canary Islands, she was given a brief rest before Carl and five of his closest comrades sailed in the transatlantic 2013 ARC race. Nineteen days of open blue water was tough on both boat and crew (though fishing provided some entertainment), and they arrived with high spirits in Saint Lucia to place 2nd  in the G Cruising Division. We are very proud of them all.

From there, HoG rested for six weeks until we were able to reunite. What now, you may ask? Well her transom does say ‘Longboat Key.’ Now we plan to bring her home!

This portion of the journey will be a bit different than our ‘Euro Trip’. To start, we have a crew change! Our favorite brother-in-law George Henisee is unfortunately remaining landlocked this round-  due to golf season, and a knee replacement. In his absence, we strive to make a conscious effort to keep candy on board and take naps while underway. As before, Emylee dropped everything and flew from Portland to meet us in Saint Lucia. Well, she dropped almost everything… Knowing the crew list had been shortened, she did bring her boyfriend Canaan. Though his resume lacked sailing experience, it had almost everything else and he’s gotten to know HoG very quickly- especially the galley!

We hope to make the trip to Florida in six weeks. Hopefully you will enjoy our (very) fragmented blog posts, as wifi is not always available and we usually moor or drop anchor at night rather than docking in a marina. Here is what we’ve done so far…
