February 1 – Layover in Les Saintes
We ended up having a fairly quiet day moored in the bay of Les Saintes, home of the biggest naval battle ever fought by the French and the English in the Caribbean. (Unfortunately the museum is closed on weekends… and it would’ve been a long walk anyway.)
After breakfast (and the morning weather forecast by Dennis via SSB), Carl and Kathie took the dinghy to shore so that we might check into Customs for Guadeloupe. Though this island may be small, this was no easy task. To simplify… Step 1: Find Customs Office. Step 2: Reward with a midday beer.
While Canaan and Em took their turn ashore for a few hours, the adults relaxed and enjoyed boat TV in the bay. After some afternoon boat tasks, we all enjoyed dinner at a French restaurant right off the dinghy dock.
February 2 – Les Saintes to Anse Deshaies
We left the beautiful bay and sailed up the west coast of Guadeloupe, with Em at the helm and steady winds to carry us. Captain Carl allowed a noontime stop for snorkeling at Pigeon Island just off the main coastline. Though we couldn’t stay for more than an hour or so, the Cousteau Reserve reef spot was not to be missed!
Regretfully, we had to move on…. so we dried off in the sun and it was another couple of hours sailing upwind. Tired but happy sailors, we dropped anchor just before dusk at Anse Deshaies.
You definitely are not awaiting another big snow/ice storm as we are. Glad you are having one wonderful experience after the other. Clare looked lovely Friday night in Susan’s dress. Know you are headed for more unforgettable experiences and vistas ahead. Love, A.J.
